Twenty-two girls were taken ill on Wednesday after eating a sweetmeat served at the post-matric hostel for students from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities. All of them have been admitted to the teaching hospital attached to the Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS). Doctors said that the condition of three students was serious. Owing to shortage of beds in the hospital, two girls were being accommodated on one bed.
“We are keeping them under observation. The condition of three girls is serious,” they said.
It is learnt that Ms. Saraswati bought the badusha sweet and distributed it among the students after the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations. An hour after eating the sweet, some of the students started vomiting and complaining of stomach ache.
‘Refused to admit’
Some of the other students alleged that a private hospital had refused to admit the girls who had fallen ill. “Staff at Nandini hospital refused to admit them. We had to come all the way to the government hospital,” said Rajeshwari, who helped get the students who were sick to the hospital.
Deputy Commissioner S.N. Nagaraju, Superintendent of Police M.N. Nagaraj and Chief Executive Officer of Raichur Zilla Panchayat Muddu Mohan and other officials visited the hospital.
Mr. Mohan told The Hindu that he had suspended the hostel warden, Saraswati, for negligence. “We have suspended the warden for her negligence and investigations are on.
I have told Mr. Nagaraj to register a case and find out where the sweet was purchased from and take action. We are looking into whether the case is registered under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act,” he said.
