A car bomb has exploded outside the Swedish consulate in Benghazi, putting security officials on high alert.

The explosion blew out the building's front, leaving debris everywhere.

No casualties were immediately reported and the Swedish foreign ministry said it had no information about the incident.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the attack, which happened a day after a group of former rebels kidnapped the prime minister.

The attack also happened days after U.S. special forces captured a Libyan al Qaeda suspect in Tripoli, outraging Islamist militants, who called for revenge attacks.

Libya has been in a state of turmoil for two years following the fall of Col. Muammar Gaddafi.
