The powernap is big in China and the Swedish-founded furniture behemoth IKEA is putting forth its best efforts to accommodate the cultural habit.

Most notably, they now invite people to catch some afternoon z’s in the showrooms of their 7 mainland China stores.

In fact, as part of their daily routine, workers there change the bed linens to make the experience more comfortable.

The snoozing acceptance doesn’t stop there. Recently one of the Hong Kong stores hosted a sleepover event they dubbed “Sleeptober”, which was attended by about 80 people.

Not everybody who comes into the store for non-shopping purposes wants to nap, though. Some wander in to hang out and escape the heat.

Others bring picnic lunches to enjoy in the chain’s numerous well-appointed sample rooms.

IKEA’s efforts to adapt to the likings of China’s notoriously tough-to-win-over consumers haven’t gone unnoticed.

After 15 years of working to adapt, IKEA is now the largest foreign holder of commercial property in China and has more stores in the works.

No doubt, that means more sleepers, but they are great spokespeople for the product. After waking from a nap in one of the beds a woman commented, “It was very comfortable.”
