Gort Evans, the man behind an online video showing a woman hiking alone in the mountains, followed by a close-up of himself wearing a ski mask, has upset a few people and caught the attention of police in Pacifica, California.
Evans, a mechanic, recorded the video on Montara Mountain and posted it to LiveLeak.com on September 22. Titled 'I made a "Friend" on the Mountain... Wait for it...', the video runs 59 seconds and shows the lone hiker in the distance. The camera used was apparently handheld and after the woman is plainly seen, Evans turns the camera around until we see him wearing a black, knitted ski mask, flashing a toothy, devious grin.
Not long after, the video was shared extensively on social media. Though intended as a joke, many viewers found the content disturbing and reported it to the police.
According to a report by CBS in San Francisco, the police questioned Evans. He defended his actions, saying he never hurt or even contacted the woman in the video. Evans said in a follow-up video that it should have been obvious that the initial video was not serious and that he isn't a rapist.
The police admitted that while many people found Evans's video upsetting, he committed no crime in making it or posting it online. Though believed to be mostly harmless, police said they will now keep an eye on Evans.
A number of people who clearly get Evans's humor have turned around to post their own parodies of the masked man video. In one, posted to a LiveLeak account called 'Eunuch', a happily bouncing baby replaces the woman.
