Three bodies found in East Cleveland; suspected serial killer arrested

The search for more victims continued through Sunday after the police of East Cleveland, Ohio, arrested 35-year-old Michael Madison in connection with three bodies found in his neighborhood. All three victims are believed to be African-American women, though their identities are not yet known.

Police discovered the first body on Friday in a garage leased to Madison after neighbors reported a foul smell. The body, which was found in a fetal position, was wrapped in plastic bags. A search of the area led to the discovery of two more bodies also wrapped in plastic bags; one was found in the basement of an abandoned house and the other among weeded area, about 150 yards from the garage where the first woman was found.

Madison, who is a registered sex offender, was taken into custody after a two-hour standoff with police. The mayor of East Cleveland said that information gathered during an interrogation of Madison led authorities to believe that the suspect might have been influenced by the acts by Cleveland serial killer, Anthony Sowell, who was sentenced to death in 2011 for killing 11 women. He also hinted that there might be other victims.

Police, with the aid of dogs specially-trained to find cadavers, as well as about 30 community volunteers scoured the area where Madison lived. The East Cleveland neighborhood has many abandoned houses.

Authorities believe that the women were killed between six and 10 days before they were found. Charges have yet to be filed against Madison.
