George Zimmerman rescues family from car wreck

George Zimmerman, the man acquitted of the murder of Trayvon Martin, rescued a family from a car wreck in Sanford, Florida last week. Zimmerman, 29, who has been in hiding since the end of his murder trial earlier this month, stopped to help after the family's blue Ford Explorer came off the road near the intersection of I-4 and Route 46 and rolled over.

The driver of the vehicle lost control of the car with a spouse and two children riding as passengers. Dana and Mark Gerstle, and their young son and daughter, were trapped when the the Explorer landed on its side. Zimmerman and another unnamed person, helped to get the family out of the car and no one was reported injured.

Zimmerman reportedly explained his involvement in the situation - he didn't witness the crash, but only assisted after the fact - then left the scene. Mark Gerstle allegedly recognized Zimmerman and told firefighters that he was the one to help him out.

This has been the first time Zimmerman has been seen in public since his trial. He has been hiding in the face of national protests, as well as death threats directed at him, his family, and his legal team. His parents have also had to leave their home, and Zimmerman allegedly wears a bulletproof vest when he ventures into public.

Zimmerman's acquittal has sparked much controversy in the United States. Though it is known he shot and killed the 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, the judge ruled that it was in self-defense.
