In Pennsylvania, many people in the Amish community are not worried about the government’s new rules about healthcare.

Healthcare reform being discussed by United States officials in Washington D.C., has led to a government shut-down, with many American citizens wondering how the new system will affect them.

In Pennsylvania, many people in the Amish community are not worried about the government’s new rules.

There are around 280 thousand Amish people in the US who shun modern technology and cars, and have also opted out of federal programs like Obamacare.

Certain communities of people, including the Amish, do not have to participate in mandates like the Affordable Care Act, which says that most Americans have to pay for health insurance.

A law passed in the US Congress in 1965 freed the Amish and Mennonites from having to pay for social security, Medicaid, or other government benefit programs.

Jan Bergen, the chief operating officer at Lancaster General Health described the Amish system by saying: “The way they come together to pay for health care is amazing. Their sense of responsibility extends beyond themselves and to the community.”

Hospitals give special benefits to the Amish, and each member of the community contributes to a group fund, which goes towards paying hospital bills.
