Gunmen attacked a vehicle carrying Rosalia Palma, a candidate for a local legislative seat in southern Mexico, on June 29.

According to reports, the attack took place near Teposcolula District in the Mixteca region of the state of Oaxaca. Palma, a member of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), was travelling with her husband and her niece, who was also her assistant. Unknown assailants opened fire on Palma's vehicle with R-15 rifles and 9mm pistols. Palma's husband and niece were killed. She sustained two gunshots in the left arm and chest.

The attack came two days after the body of Nicolas Estrada, a leader of the left-wing Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) in southern Oaxaca, was found in Teuxtepec, Oaxaca, with three gunshot wounds to the head.
