A woman died after falling out of the Texas Giant roller coaster at the Six Flags Over Texas amusement park in Arlington, Texas. The accident happened Friday evening about 20 miles west of Texas.
Sharon Parker, a spokesperson for the park, confirmed the death, but did not specify what went wrong. According to witnesses the unidentified woman asked for the ride attendants to double check her seat after she only heard one click, as opposed to three, when she was being secured into her seat. The attendant told her that only one click was needed to be heard for securing purposes.
"She goes up like this. Then when it drops to come down, that's when it (the safety bar) released and she just tumbled," Carmen Brown told The Dallas Morning News. Witnesses told media local media outlets that the woman was on the ride with her son and fell to hear death.
The Texas Giant first opened in 1990 as a an all-wooden coaster. The ride can carry up to 24 riders, has a drop of 79 degrees and a bank if 95 degrees. In 2010 the Texas Giant went through a renovation to install steel-hybrid rails before reopening in 2011. The Texas Giant reaches 14 stories high and is billed as the tallest steel-hybrid coaster in the world.
Six Flags has temporarily closed the section of the park where the accident occurred and has not yet released when they will reopen. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident and whether or not staff could have prevented it.
