One woman was killed and seven people are missing after a boat carrying illegal workers from Malaysia back home to Indonesia capsized during rough seas. The boat was taking the boatload of illegal workers from southern Johor state to the Indonesian island of Batam. The wooden boat was believed to be smuggling the workers from Malaysia, taking them home in time for the end of Ramadan.
Reports said there were 35 people on board when the ship overturned in rough seas. Around 28 people managed to cling to the upturned hull of the ship for around 12 hours until they were rescued by a passing tanker, before being transferred to coast guard vessels. The victims, all Indonesian and including three women and one baby, were plucked out of the water around 34 nautical miles northeast of Tanjung Sedili Besar by the crew of the MT Octaden. The search is still ongoing for seven men still believed to be missing at sea.
