A Sparta, New Jersey pot dealer was arrested last week after mistakenly texting a police officer's son about a potential drug deal.
Nicholas Delear Jr., 33, broadcast the message on September 27, unaware that the recipient was none other than the 10-year-old son of Sparta Police Department Lieutenant Eric Danielson.
Danielson became aware of the message's peculiar content and began a text exchange with Delear while posing as the message's intended recipient.
"I read the text message and I was intrigued," Danielson said. "So we attempted to pretend to be who he thought he was texting."
The two agreed to the deal and arranged a meeting at a local pizza restaurant. Delear arrived as planned, but soon became suspicious of the undercover officer and fled.
Police quickly tracked his vehicle down with the intent to conduct a search for drugs. Delear would not consent to a search and so a sniffer dog was employed.
After finding reasonable grounds for a search they obtained a warrant and went through Delear's car. The search uncovered four one-ounce bags of cannabis, $620 in cash and a digital pocket scale.
Delear faces numerous drug charges and is scheduled to appear in Sparta Municipal Court on October 10.
