At least seven people were injured in an oil pipeline explosion after an attempt theft of crude oil in Tonanitla, near Mexico City on July 21. It was reported that five of the injured were police officers and two were firefighters. The state oil company Pemex said the officers were too close to the blaze and were hurt in a secondary explosion. Two patrol cars were also incinerated by the fire.

According to Reuters, pipeline taps are a frequent menace to Pemex, which loses hundreds of millions of dollars a year to oil theft.
