Syria Crisis: Western military options for strikes against Assad regime

2013-10-02 1

With air-attacks from western countries on war-torn Syria imminent, analysts measure the most-likely scenarios for when and where the strikes will occur.

The United States Navy is currently repositioning vessels in the region, including four cruise missile-carrying destroyers in the Mediterranean as well as a submarine, according to BBC. Those destroyers would likely be USS Gravely, USS Ramage, USS Barry and USS Mahan.

The United Kingdom could attack from the Mediterranean using Trafalgar class submarines. The Royal Navy's response force task group, which includes helicopter carrier HMS Illustrious and frigates HMS Montrose and HMS Westminster, is also in the region and could be used in the conflict.

For additional firepower, land missiles stationed in Turkey and Cyprus might also be deployed, while the U.S. and France have an aircraft carrier and air base in the United Arab Emirates.

Possible targets could include major Syrian government armed forces and air bases scattered throughout the country, most notably in Damascus, Homs, Hama and Aleppo.
