In northwest Poland, a man walking through a local forest stumbled on a giant mushroom.

In the great outdoors, we find an overwhelming diversity in terms of plants and animals. There are also quite a few unexpected and seemingly bizarre surprises lurking in some forests.

That was the case in northwest Poland where a man walking through a local forest stumbled on a giant mushroom. The massive shroom weighed over 6.5 pounds and measured nearly 16 inches in diameter.

The man who discovered the mushroom claimed he planned on using some of it in a cabbage soup, as part of a Christmas meal. Classified as a boletus or porcini mushroom, they are widely thought to be some of the tastiest.

Although there are many species of Boletus, they all bear a similar appearance. The mushrooms usually do not have glandular dots on their stems and the pores aren’t elongated.

Instead their spore prints are typically brownish in color and the mushrooms also have solid stems. In addition to their earthy taste, mushrooms are said to have extra benefits including some hard-to-get nutrients such as selenium.
