An RAF Tornado jet nearly collided with a civilian DG-808 glider over Scotland on April 30. The RAF Tornado was flying at 500 miles per hour 250 feet off the ground. The Tornado flew south from RAF Lossiemouth, while the glider flew north from Portmoak, Kinross, and the two met near Aviemore.
The pilots testified that they didn't see each other until the last second. The Tornado pilot pushed the control stick forward. This inverted the plane in a "bunt" maneuver, while the glider pilot pulled up. At their nearest, the two planes were only 100 feet apart.
The Tornado pilot testified that the likelihood of collision was "high".
