World's slowest police chase: Moped driver leads police on 25 mph pursuit

2013-10-01 7

A moped-riding man was arrested by Indiana police after leading almost a dozen police cars on a nearly one hour low-speed chase.

Lagrant Smith was pulled over by a Fort Wayne police officer around 10:15pm on Friday for driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

The 40-year-old, refusing to turn of his vehicle's engine, put the pedal to the metal and puttered away on the stolen 2012 Linhai moped. The police followed, hot on his heels, and a low-speed chase ensued!

Reaching hair-raising speeds of up to 25 mph, Smith led 10 police cars on an epic chase that last nearly a full hour.

"He was just having a good old time," said Officer Michael Joyner to the New York Daily News. "He knew his goose was going to be cooked ... he turned it into a circus."

"He was just driving around," said Police spokesman Sgt. Mark Brooks, according to a (Fort Wayne) Journal Gazette report.

At around 11:15pm, Smith ditched the bike and fled on foot. His luck quickly ran out, however, as the officer who had initially stopped Smith put an end to the farce with the help of a taser.

"This is very unique to say the least," said officer Joyner. "One being the fact that it lasted so long and two being the fact that it's a moped."

Smith was taken to jail and charged with criminal recklessness, leaving the scene of an accident, possession of marijuana, reckless driving, receiving stolen property and two counts of resisting law enforcement. His bail has been set to $8,250 bail.
