An explosion ripped through a restaurant area the southern Philippine city of Cagayan de Oro late on Friday, killing six people, including a provincial board member, and wounding dozens.
Misamis Oriental provincial board member Roldan Lagbas was hit by shrapnel in the head, said Cagayan de Oro police chief Graciano Mijares, according to The Philippine Star.
Fatalities identified so far include lawyer Antonio Paredes, doctor Erwin Malanay, and pharmaceutical representatives Manny Falafox, Anthony Cañete, and Ryan Saso Estose.
Many of those who were hurt in the blast were representatives of pharmaceutical companies who were attending the mid-year convention of the Philippine College of Chest Physicians (PCCP) at a nearby hotel.
Police said the explosive was placed in a backpack on a chair near the table where Lagbas and his companions were seated. Reports stated that the explosion shattered glass windows, turned over tables and chairs, and caused damage to cars parked up to 30 meters away. Bomb fragments were later recovered as far as 50 meters away from the table.
According to Reuters, "No one has claimed responsibility for the attack and an army spokesman said security forces are looking into a potential motive for the attack, including the possible involvement of communist rebels who are active in the area.
"'Three people were killed on the spot from the blast,' said army spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Leo Bongosia, adding three others including a local politician died in hospitals. 'We were shocked. We don't have this kind of attack in years.'"
