A New York man was killed in a tragic accident on Saturday after nearly having his head sliced clean off in a booby trap he set up to protect marijuana plants in his backyard. The 50-year-old Daniel Ricketts of Albany County installed barbed wire, a leg trap not unlike those used to catch coyotes, and a thin wire, whose security function remains unknown, around the plants to keep away potential pot-snatchers.
That Saturday afternoon, Ricketts mounted his all-terrain vehicle, possibly after drinking alcohol, and drove straight into the piano wire which was, by that point, at neck-level. The force of the collision was adequate to almost decapitate the man, who died from the injury.
Little is known beyond this point, though Albany County Sheriff Craig D. Apple said the investigation is ongoing. Ricketts owned the property on which he planted the Mary Jane, though it is unclear what motivated him to install the booby traps.
There has been no mention of Ricketts's personal life and no indication of who found his mostly headless and bloody body on what was probably a still-running ATV in the backyard. It has also yet to be reported if Ricketts had any previous record of marijuana possession or distribution, or history of injuries related to excessive creativity or lapses in memory or judgement. Ricketts's mental health condition is also not known and it has yet to be determined why he cultivated the marijuana, how he acquired the seeds or seedlings to start the process, or even which strain of the species it was.
