KRON reporter Jeff Bush was robbed of computer and camera gear shortly after concluding an , interview near 3rd and La Salle street in Bayview, San Francisco, prompting his security guard to open fire. Armani McFarland, 19, and John Woods, 19, have been arrested in the suspected armed robbery. One of the suspects was hit in the leg.
The incident took place on Friday night at about 8pm in the 1500 block of La Salle Avenue. According to KRON, Bush was accosted by the two suspects, who demand his computer and camera gear. Bush handover the equipment and "took cover" as the security guard assigned to protect the KRON news crew opened fire.
One of the suspects was hit in the leg, although police did not specify who. A black Audi later arrived at San Francisco General Hospital with two men. One of the two men had a gunshot wound. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the occupants told police they had been fired upon near Third Street and La Salle Avenue.
TV news crews have increasingly become the target of brazen robberies in dangerous neighborhoods in San Francisco and Oakland where they report. In one incident, a robber grabbed a camera while a journalist was reporting live during a noon broadcast. To protect news crews, TV stations have hired private security guard, many of them former police officers, to accompany reporters on assignment.
Armani McFarland and John Woods will face robbery and conspiracy charges, while McFarland faces an additional firearm charge.
