Norman Oosterbroek, 43, a well-known bodyguard who has worked for celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Rihanna, and Nelson Mandela, was killed on Monday night when he was tasered by Miami police for breaking into a neighbor's home while high ... and naked.
Oosterbroek, also known as the 'Dutch Giant' due to his 6-foot-five, 280-pound frame, allegedly broke into his neighbor's Miami mansion at around 10:45 p.m. on Monday night (September 2), according to the Miami Herald. Homeowners Markus and Christiane Jung called the police after Mrs. Jung heard a noise outside and found Oosterbroek on their property.
By the time police arrived, they found Oosterbroek already fighting with Mr. Jung. Officers reported that they saw Oosterbroek take a unknown substance during the fight as he violently resisted arrest. Unable to overpower the man, police used tasers, hitting Oosterbroek in the chest. He was later pronounced dead at Baptist Hospital.
According to Miami-Dade police spokesperson, Nancy Perez, Oosterbroek was highly violent, uncontrollable and obviously wasn't stable. Although reports say officers were justified in their response to the situation, it was the second time in recent months that Miami police have been involved in a taser death.
Officers said they Oosterbroek's heightened body temperature suggested he had ingested cocaine. However, officials are still awaiting toxicology reports.
The Miami Herald reports that Oosterbroek had been in and out of rehab for many years for a drug addiction.
Mrs. Jung said they did not know Oosterbroek well, and were traumatized by Monday night's events.
"Our family needs time to heal. This was really, really horrible and we can't talk about it now," Mrs. Jung told the Miami Herald. "I can tell you that Pinecrest police took very good care of us. It was horrifying."
