Six Cambodian farmers traveling in a tractor died and one was injured after an old anti-tank mine planted by the Khmer Rouge exploded.

According to reports, the accident happened in northern Preah Vihear province.

The farmers were traveling through a flooded area to inspect their paddy fields when a landmine left over from the civil war planted by Khmer Rouge soldier exploded.

According to reports, the place where the mine exploded was the site of intense fighting between communist Khmer Rouge guerrillas and government troops in the 80s and 90s.

Every year an estimated number of 4 to 6 million uncleared landmines and unexploded ordnance kill or maim more than 200 people in Cambodia despite an ongoing de-mining drive.

According to AFP, "Nearly three decades of civil war and a secret US bombing campaign during the Vietnam War have left the impoverished southeast Asian nation as one of the world's most heavily mined countries.

"Late last month, two Cambodian children and a man were killed when their buffalo cart hit an anti-tank mine in northwestern Oddar Meanchey province."
