The sight of an airplane parked on the grass near Lake Shore Drive in downtown Chicago have surprised many passersby on Sunday.
51-year-old John Pedersen was flying his two-seat plane when a stabilizing part broke loose, causing the plane to shake violently.
He sent out a mayday call but knew there was no way he could make it to the nearest airport.
He then picked a landing spot on
Lake Shore Drive, planted his plane smoothly on the street when cars were stopped at a red traffic light.
Luckily, only two cars hit the plane when it was parked in the middle of the street. Pedersen was unharmed and no other injuries were reported.
