Apple maps app fails again: leads drivers onto Alaskan runway

2013-09-26 22

Apple maps is bad at its job.

In its latest great fail, the application directs drivers trying to find Alaska's Fairfield International Airport right onto the tarmac.

The obtuse directions on the faulty application led drivers down a service road designed to be used exclusively for planes, before leading the unwitting drivers right out onto the runway.

Although, it's hard to discern who is more faulty, the app leading drivers onto the runway, the airport that has no barricades between the road and the runway or the oblivious drivers who drive past a multitude of signs saying "WRONG WAY", "GO BACK", "DANGER" and "PLANES ONLY".

In the past month two cars have found themselves ready for takeoff at the airport, prompting Apple maps to revoke directions to the airport from its application and the airport to install proper barricading.

We wonder if it has also prompted drivers to pay attention to their surroundings but this is a hard one to gauge.

This isn't the first time Apple maps has put unwitting drivers in danger.

In Australia, police called the app "life-threatening" after they had to conduct rescue missions to recover drivers who had driven to deserted strips of the outback the maps application had guided them to.

In Ireland, passengers wanting to board a plane, were guided, not to the airport, but to a small country farm called "Airfield".
