The Pakistani schoolgirl shot by the Taliban for campaigning for girls' education collects the Clinton Global Citizens Award in New York.

Malala Yousufzai is co-founder of a fund pushing for universal access to learning.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) MALALA YOUSUFZAI SAYING:

"Instead of sending tanks, send pens; instead of sending soldiers, send teachers; instead of sending guns, send pens. Fight terrorism through education. And let me remind you once again that one book, one pen and one teacher can change the world."

Malala was 14 when a Taliban gunman shot her last year.

She was sent to the United Kingdom for treatment for severe injuries.

The attack was condemned both at home and internationally.

Now she's become a potent symbol of resistance against the Pakistan Taliban's efforts to deprive girls of an education.

The Global Citizens Award is the latest in the series of honour
