A fast-moving brush fire ripped through parts of southern California on Monday.

The U.S. Forest Service says firefighters are battling the blaze that's scorched 40 acres of land already and is threatening homes on the fire's northern flank.

The fire broke out Monday evening in the San Gabriel Canyon.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
