The trial resumes on Monday (September 23) of Costa Concordia captain Francesco Schettino, accused of manslaughter and abandoning ship.

Schettino, 52, is now the only person left on trial and he is seeking a plea bargain to reduce a possible jail sentence.

Schettino refused to speak to the media camped outside.

Four Costa Concordia crew members and a company official were sentenced to jail in July for their part in the disaster, leaving only Schettino still on trial.

The captain is accused of abandoning ship before all crew and passengers had been rescued. A coastguard's angry phone order to him - "Get back on board, damn it!" - became a catch phrase in Italy after the accident.
