Enrolling in any new school comes with a whole slew of seemingly never ending paperwork. However freshmen enrolling at the City College of Dongguan University of Technology, located in China have a bizarre and disturbing new waiver that requires a signature.
Basically the agreement states that the school is not responsible for any student’s decision to commit suicide. Although the suicide rates in the area among the younger age group are relatively low, there is an increasing threat of litigation, due to the high stress levels university students are under these days.
College authorities seemingly decided it was time to have some insurance in the event of tragedy. Parents aren’t happy with the agreement.
One local mother, whose son just enrolled in college this year stated “The school should provide counseling services and other help for students, instead of trying to absolve themselves of responsibility even before anything has happened.”
Out of the Chinese class of 2013, only 35 percent of graduates had secured employment by the time of graduation. That gloomy statistic may be adding to the stress load of students.
