Cuisine in space is about to get more interesting. Orbital Sciences Corporation is set to launch Cygnus, a commercial cargo spacecraft headed for the International Space Station.
Its payload includes chocolate.
Cygnus marks the debut of a new contracted delivery service to the orbiting research center. The task has been out-sourced now that NASA is no longer in the shuttle business.
As it’s the maiden voyage for Orbital Sciences’ craft, the cargo is comprised of food and non-essentials.
The chocolate bar is a special delivery for astronaut Karen Nyberg, one of the US astronauts at the station.
She hasn’t mentioned if she plans to share it with her Space Station cohabitants.
Can’t really blame her if she doesn’t - the treat is a special gift from her husband, who made arrangements to have a care package stashed onboard the Cygnus.
Nyberg is looking forward to it, but admits she’d really love a fresh baked good.
Fresh is still a bit of a challenge, though, as the shipment takes several days to make it to its destination.
Warm brownies will probably have to wait until she returns to Earth.
