As a solution to the serious issue, Romania's parliament recently voted in favor of collecting the strays and scheduling the unclaimed dogs for euthanization. It’s been estimated that there about 64,000 stray dogs in the area.
Many locals are thrilled with the decision as the dogs are known to tear through public trash bins, and sadly have bitten thousands of residents each year.
Adding to the terror among locals, a woman was killed by a pack of strays and a Japanese tourist passed away after a dog severed an artery in the man’s leg during an attack. Most recently, a 4-year-old child was mauled to death while playing in a local park.
Despite the threats the stray dogs are posing, animal activists are in an uproar over the decision to euthanize them. Animal groups are calling the vote barbaric and plan on taking their appeal to the European Commission to have the law thrown out.
