Well drivers on River Road in Zilwaukee, Michigan got quite a surprise after an electronic road sign was hacked by an unidentified jokester. The sign read ‘I-75 closed ahead due to loose gorilla’.
The sign originally began displaying that warning on a Friday evening. Amazingly, MDOT, or Michigan Department of Transportation authorities did not catch the fake alert until Saturday morning.
MDOT is currently investigating the incident to see how it happened. Spokeswoman Anita Richardson stated “We're just looking into measures to see what we can do in terms of security to make sure it doesn't happen again. We don't know who was responsible.”
It is not believed a criminal complaint has been filed in regards to the incident. According to Richardson, only contractors and transportation employees have the ability to alter message boards from remote locations.
However in the world of electronic hacking, anyone with the right tools and knowledge can get into a computer system and have complete control.
