A hole dug next to a grave in a Gloucester cemetery is though by authorities to be the work of thieves.

The theory is that they were digging to gain access to the casket in hopes of finding valuable jewelry.

They made it 4 feet down before abandoning the effort, at least for the time.

Police said that in the space they found two overturned recycling boxes covered with a bit of dirt, as if the robbers were trying to conceal it.

It was also posited that the people who dug the hole could have been trying to hide something, not take items from the graves.

No damage was done to the casket itself, but the family is deeply distraught by the attempt.

Relatives of the deceased said the incident was proof that the, "dead can't rest anymore".

Family members have now taken to guarding the grave themselves, as they believe the perpetrators will come back to finish the job.

They wanted to install video cameras, but due to it being a public space that wasn’t possible.
