STORY: Hundreds of firefighters continued a battle to contain wild blazes in north Portugal on Monday (September 2).

At least 48 outbreaks had been reported since midnight, the web site of the National Authority for Civil Protection said.

The biggest firefighting operation was in Sever do Vouga where 100 firefighters were deployed as a forest fire burned on three fronts, forcing the shutdown of the main A25 freeway.

A fire in Gondomar was contained by air and ground-based firefighting efforts, but some 250 fire personnel were on site in case of a resurgence.

On Sunday (September 1), fires threatened several residental areas and dozens of homes were evacuated. Nine people were treated for minor injuries.
