Sotheby’s has chosen Hong Kong as the auction locale for a 7.59 carat blue diamond expected to bring in 19 million dollars.
The stone is described as being round, brilliant-cut, internally flawless, and fancy vivid.
If it brings in the 19 million the auction house is anticipating, it will set a record in the price per carat category.
Colored diamonds currently represent the upper echelon of precious gem sales due to their rarity. They account for only .01 percent of those mined.
The color comes from the quantity of boron – the more there is, the more intense the color.
This particular gem hails from the Premier Mine located near Pretoria, South Africa. The name of the seller has been kept a secret.
Another characteristic contributing to its expected high price tag is it’s round cut, something scarcely seen in stones of its hue.
One London jeweler commented that round stones in general are more popular. He also said that colored stones are increasingly becoming investment purchases in an otherwise unpredictable financial market.
Before going on the block in October, the stone will be on a viewing tour around Asia.
