The United Nations Stabilization Mission in Mali is one of the most ambitious in the world. It will eventually have over 12,000 Blue Helmets and aims to protect civilians, help the new government and support national dialogue - essentially with the Tuaregs. In the past, many UN peacekeeping missions, especially in Africa, have failed to protect civilians.
