Afghanistan suicide attack kills Kunduz district governor, civilians

A suicide attack in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province kills a district governor, one of his bodyguards and 10 civilians at a memorial service at a mosque.

It was the latest in a string of attacks this week across Afghanistan, where insurgents are seeking to destabilize the government ahead of the withdrawal of most international troops by the end of 2014.

Brigadier General Heinz Feldmann was made available to Reuters by the Pentagon.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH)BRIGADIER GENERAL HEINZ FELDMANN, SAYING:

"We are clearly in the second half of the fighting season. We saw during the last week a slight increase of the activities but they are still below the level of violence we have seen before Ramadan. We are still six weeks from the end of the fighting season and we are going to make our final assessment at the end of course, and that is the situation we face right now."
