Mexico mob routs local police

Chaos reigns in the Mexican town of Tixtla as local vigilantes turn on police they say are hand in glove with organised criminals.

The vigilantes armed themselves with hunting rifles before launching their assault in broad daylight.

During three hours they seized the town's municipal centre, attacked police officers and confiscated their weapons.

The vigilantes demanded the release of detained comrades.

They say the police are colluding with the criminals they're supposed to stand against.

(SOUNDBITE)(Spanish) GONZALO MOLINA, PROMOTER FOR TIXTLA'S COMMUNITY POLICE VIGILANTE GROUP, SAYING:

"We want society to know how the government is releasing this mafia, these crooks. Why? Because they're in cahoots with crime. Today they're governing crime, organised crime, from top to bottom with the police."

Such vigilante groups in Tixtla and Guerrero state as a whole are popular with local residents.

It's a violent place where people have little
