Snow clad peaks of Gangotri; mighty and rugged yet charming

Gangotri is situated at an altitude of 3,048mts above sea level at the Uttarakashi district of Uttarakhand state. Located on the banks of the holy Bhagirathi River is one of the Char Dhams of Uttarakhand. there is a natural rock shivling at Gangotri which can be easily seen during winter because the water level decreases during that time. According to myths and legends, this was where Lord Shiv sat when he received the Ganga in hi matted locks.

Gangotri ios the highest and most important temple of Goddess Ganga. this small town centres around the Gangotri temple of Goddess Ganga. the present temple was built by Amar Singh Thapa, Gorkha General in the early 18th century. The origin of Bhagirathi river is 18kms from Gangotri and one must cover the distance on foot. Gangotri offers scenic vistas of rugged terrain, gushing water of Bhagirathi river and snow clad peaks. The place holds great importance amongst the Hindus. Gangotri remains opened from May and closed on the day of Diwali Festival. Gangotri remains closed during winter because the region is prone to heavy snowfall.
