Poland is embroiled in a controversy over ritual slaughter: the killing of animals according to Muslim or Jewish tradition, without pre-stunning. Last year a court ruled it illegal, and just last month, parliament rejected a bill to allow the practice. Muslim and Jewish communities have appealed to the constitutional court in the name of religious freedom.
