Animals are notorious for getting into things that are seemingly harmless but can be quite dangerous for them. A curious hedgehog in the United Kingdom was forced to undergo veterinary care after it got tangled in a Christmas tree decoration.
Weight less than half a pound, the creature was taken to Henley House Vets in Uckfield for treatment of wounds encountered during the ordeal. A wildlife rescue spokesperson stated “I have never seen such an unusual cause of a ligature wound and pressure necrosis on a wild animal before. We see similar wounds caused by elastic bands, snares and netting but not caused by a Christmas bauble before.”
The female hedgehog, now named Izzy was given a general anesthetic to clean and treat the cuts. She was subsequently admitted into a casualty care center for animals where veterinary staff will monitor her daily and continue to clean the wounds to cure and prevent further infection.
The Christmas decoration was a small looped ornament that had caught around her body, causing serious injury.
