With so much attention given to the perils of driving while intoxicated, very few people seem to be discussing the dangers of drunk walking.
Well, apparently they should be because they’re real.
According to the Associated Press, a recent study revealed that a third of the pedestrian deaths in 2011 were people who were too intoxicated to drive.
In the 25 to 34 age range, over half of pedestrian fatalities were found to have blood alcohol content levels of .08, the nationwide legal limit, or greater.
Only 13 percent of the drivers involved in the pedestrian accidents resulting in deaths were impaired.
The spokesman for the Governors Highway Safety Association said that what is probably motivating many of them to walk in the first place are the anti-drinking and driving campaigns.
He also said that drinking fuels a fair number of bad pedestrian decisions as well, like trying to beat an approaching bus or crossing against a light.
In an effort to reduce the number of alcohol-related walking deaths, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx released a significant amount of relevant data, which was collected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
