Ever wondered who invented the first super soaker squirt gun?
Back in 1989, Lonnie Johnson met with Larami executives to show them his version of a squirt gun, which he had fashioned by himself out of PVC pipe and Plexiglass, including the valves.

He demonstrated the strength of the super soaker right there in the conference room.

Johnson recalled: “At that point, I knew I had captured their imagination. They could see what I had seen in the water gun all along.”

Previously working for NASA as a senior systems engineer at their Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, California, Johnson came up with the idea for what would become the best selling toy of the early 1990s.

Johnson is now working on a thermoelectric project with scientists from Tulane and Tuskegee universities, trying to make solar panels even more efficient and affordable.

While its inventor is off pursuing loftier things, the Supersoaker remains the gold standard of water guns. It’s capable of shooting water much further than a water pistol using an air pump pressure system.

Many people make home made modifications to store bought water guns to make them more powerful, more portable, or capable of holding more water.
