New research suggests that climate change might be related to an increase in violent acts like murders, rapes and even wars around the world.
By looking at the data results from about 60 different studies done around the world, researchers found a strong correlation between higher temperatures or drought, and increases in violent crime and civil unrest.
The researchers cited that there was more domestic violence in India after a drought, and the number of assaults, rapes and murders in the United States increased during heat waves.
Although the data doesn’t prove a direct causality, there are other conditions caused by climate change that might influence people’s decisions.
Marshall Burke, from the University of California, Berkeley, who worked on the study said: “We know that climate affects economic conditions around the world, particularly agrarian parts of the world. And there is lots of evidence that changes in economic conditions affect people's decisions about whether or not to join a rebellion, for example.”
Being exposed to very hot temperatures can reportedly make people more aggressive and less trusting along with making them more violent.
What do you think? Is it possible that there is a connection between climate change and violence?
