Last August a young California man ran his SUV into a fire hydrant and knocked down an electric pole. Two of the people who came to his rescue stepped in the water near the downed power lines and were electrocuted. The then 19-year-old driver is now facing charges of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence as a result.

The Los Angeles County Superior Court judge gave her decision after hearing testimony from several people who were at the scene of the Valley Village accident.
Both authorities and witnesses verified that just before the crash they’d seen the SUV traveling at a speed well above the limit.
The driver’s attorney tried to diffuse the statements by saying that regardless of that fact, his client had no way of knowing that his actions would result in the electrocution of two people.
Testimony was also given by the husband of one of the would be rescuers. He was present when his wife died, but by his account everything happened too quickly to be stopped.
If convicted, the driver faces a prison sentence of up to 7 years and 4 months.
