A public warning has been issued in North Carolina, concerning alligators. The safety alert comes after a giant, 500 pound gator that measured over 12 feet long attacked and ate an 80 pound dog.

Local authorities sprang into action after the incident and killed the reptile, shooting it three times with a high powered rifle. The way that the alligator killed the dog is incredibly disturbing.

A woman had been walking her Husky, without a leash, near a bridge at around dusk when the massive reptile approached the pet and immediately snatched it. The dog had wandered down to the water to get a drink.

The pet owner was thankfully unhurt. The city has since installed signs alerting residents that alligators are in the vicinity and asking them not to feed any ducks and to keep domestic animals on a leash at all times.

The decision to kill the gator came after authorities realized it was far too large to relocate and that it posed a threat to the public’s safety. After the shooting, the remains of the dog were located inside the alligator.
