UK: feminist campaigner receives Twitter rape and death threats
Feminist campaigner and blogger Caroline Criado-Perez was behind the online petition which drew over 35 000 signatures and convinced the Bank of England to make novelist Jane Austen the new face of the 10 pound bank note as of 2017.
But her successful campaigning sparked a stream of sexist comments, insults and threats on Twitter. Caroline Criado-Perez says she received around 50 rape threats per hour after the new ten pound note was unveiled on Wednesday. According to British Press, she lodged a complaint but this has led to just one arrest, in the Manchester region, so far.
But the blogger says she is determined to fight this type of harassment and is urging Twitter to face up to its responsibilities. She, and many other web users, have denounced the procedures in place for reporting abuse on the micro blogging site – saying the process is far too long.
A petition has been started, calling upon the platform to adopt a zero tolerance policy for hate speech or abusive comments, and to develop a button to allow users to report it immediately, via a tweet to the site’s administrators. The document has been signed by over 50 000 web users in just two days.
