Sindh Governor Ishrat-ul-Ebad inaugurated the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases (KIHD).
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, the governor said that the KIHD had been equipped with latest medical equipment and machinery so that the heart patients could avail better medical facilities.
Those who accompanied him on this occasion included Dr Sagheer Ahmed, Provincial Minister for Health, MNA Shaikh Salahuddin, KMC Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed, Director Medical Services Dr AD Sajnani, Director General Technical Services Altaf G Memon, Acting Executive Director Dr Tahir Hussain, Dr Sirajul Haq, Dr Ashraf Siddiqui and other cardiac physicians and officers.
The governor said this hospital was providing best medical facilities to the poor and deserving citizens. “This hospital has now become a symbol of Pakistan and heart patients from different areas of Karachi and from other cities of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan visiting this hospital. Construction of 240-bed hospital complex was also underway where people suffering from heart ailments would get even better treatment facilities,” he said.
Karachi Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed while giving a briefing said that the CCU-II of KIHD had been provided with dialysis machines, ECG machines, 15 monitoring machines, three ventilators and a portable x-ray machine whereas the CCU was made centrally air-conditioned so that the heart patients could get medical treatment facilities under one roof.
He said more than 7,00,000 patients were provided with medical treatment facility in the KIHD during the last six years. This figure includes the angioplasty of over 12,000 patients and heart bypass operation of 200 patients. More than 42,000 patients were admitted to this hospital for medical treatment.
A sum of Rs20 million was incurred on the purchase of machinery for the KIHD. High-powered electric generators were installed in the hospital for non-stop supply of electricity with the fixing of new phases to ensure round the clock running of machines. He said the trust of citizens on this hospital had increase in the last six years and now the people in large number visiting KIHD for getting treatment for heart ailments and open heart surgery.
Muhammad Hussain Syed said KMC spends Rs200million per annum on this hospital which was less than the required funds to run this facility therefore an increase would be made in it in the current year.
The governor said this hospital had already acquired the status of a postgraduate medical institute and soon it would offer a two-year cardiology diploma course and three-year medical and technical course to aspiring students. He said besides patients from Karachi, people suffering from heart ailments from other cities of Sindh also come here for getting medical treatment.
