Cuban president Raul Castro has pointed to a gradual transfer of power to the younger generation.
The 82-year-old was speaking at the 60th anniversary of an attack which sparked the Cuban revolution, led by his sibling Fidel.
Both brothers have held onto power for over fifty years.
Fidel, the ailing former leader of the communist nation, remained out of sight in Havana.
