Pope Francis has been greeted by an audience of up to a million people on Rio de Janeiro's famous Copacabana beach.
He attended a ceremony for World Youth Day - an international gathering of young Catholics - as rain continued to fall into the evening.
Earlier in the day, the wet weather did not appear to dampen spirits, as Francis dropped into a favela neighbourhood.
