Volvo’s latest Hybrid Car has a solar powered charging pavilion accessory created by Synthesis Design + Architecture, an architecture firm out of Los Angeles, California.
The Pure Tension Pavilion folds out and uses solar power to charge the car’s battery.
It folds up to fit in the trunk of the V60 hybrid Volvo, while it is in transit to be shown on display at automobile presentations and other events.
Made from high density polyethylene mesh, photovoltaic panels and carbon fiber rods, the charging pavilion has design elements that are distinctly sculptural.
Out of 150 different entries, the pavilion won the Switch to Pure Volvo competition put on by Volvo Car Italia and The Plan, an architecture magazine from Italy.
SDA principal and founder, Alvin Huang said: “This competition presented us with a unique challenge as architects. It addressed issues we are constantly working on and offered the potential to address sustainability as something much broader that can also encompass issues of identity, contemporary culture, materiality, permanence, and personal mobility.”
The V60 and the Pure Tension Pavilion will be on display in Rome, Italy on September 15th, 2013.
