Israel, Palestine could resume peace talks-Kerry

US Secretary of State John Kerry says Israeli and Palestinian leaders have laid the groundwork for resuming peace talks. Julie Noce reports.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced Friday a possible return to peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE, JOHN KERRY, SAYING:

"I am pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement that establishes a basis for resuming direct final status negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis. This is a significant and welcome step forward. The agreement is still in the process of being formalized."

Kerry made the announcement from Jordan after negotiations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Kerry was quick to praise both leaders on their cooperation.
